"The ultimate symbol of Imperial mechanized power, the AT-AT provides incredible firepower to the battlefield. Being large and slow, it is vulnerable to starship strikes and Rocket Turrets"
~In-game description of AT-AT
The AT-AT isn't really an effective option, at a low level, where its high troop count and slow speed prevents it from unleashing its true potential against the enemy. The hero variant should be used instead as it saves a 30 unit slot while stronger and tougher.
At higher levels, the AT-AT makes a shine when it can help assassinate shield generators, from a greater distance, than the AT-MP. However, its slow speed makes it hard to keep up with the assault but it's best suited at blasting a majority of the base, that was protected by the shield domes.
A vanguard of smaller units can help pave the way for this walker but be sure to have a couple repair droids on hand when it gets into lethal range of Rocket Turrets, the Elite variant can last a while longer when employed with the same strategy.
The AT-AT sluggish nature makes it awful in a defense operation. Its high health pool make more desirable but it can't employ its weapons well enough, if the fighting is occuring in different parts of the base.
This should be left more of an offensive unit, than it is defensively.
